OpenAI has officially unveiled a dedicated ChatGPT application for Windows, marking a significant step in making AI more accessible and user-friendly. This new app aims to enhance the experience for users, offering a seamless way to interact with the popular language model directly from their desktops.
The launch of the Windows app comes in response to growing demand for a more integrated and efficient way to use ChatGPT. While the web version has been a popular tool for many, the dedicated application provides a more robust solution, optimising performance and user interface tailored specifically for desktop use.

The app is an early version, OpenAI says, arriving ahead of a “full experience” later in the year. One of the standout features of the ChatGPT app is its improved responsiveness. Users can expect faster load times and smoother interactions, allowing for more fluid conversations. The app also supports a range of functionalities that are designed to cater to different user needs, from casual enquiries to more complex tasks. This versatility makes it suitable for professionals, students, and anyone seeking quick access to information or assistance.
“With the official ChatGPT desktop app, you can chat about files and photos,” OpenAI states. “This app brings you the newest model improvements from OpenAI, including access to OpenAI o1-preview, our newest and smartest model.” Additionally, the app boasts a clean and intuitive interface, making it easy for users to navigate and utilise its features effectively. The design focuses on minimising distractions, allowing users to concentrate on their interactions without unnecessary clutter. This focus on user experience is essential for maximising productivity, particularly for those who rely on ChatGPT for work or study.
The ChatGPT app for Windows is compatible with most Windows 10 devices; however, it does have some limitations when compared to other ChatGPT clients. Notably, it does not yet support voice functionality, including Advanced Voice Mode, and certain integrations with OpenAI’s GPT Store are not operational at this time.
Similar to the ChatGPT app for macOS, the Windows version allows users to minimise it into a small “companion” window that can sit alongside other applications while you work. You can upload files and images, ask it to summarise documents, and generate images using OpenAI’s DALL-E 3.
The app is currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users.
